From Creamer Media in Johannesburg, this is the Real Economy Report.

Sashnee Moodley:

French maltster Soufflet Malt has started construction of its new R2-billion malting facility next to multinational brewer Heineken's Sedibeng Brewery, in the Midvaal municipality. Schalk Burger has the story.

Schalk Burger:

Soufflet Malt's new facility will have a production capacity of 100 000 t/y of malt and will source 100% of its barley from local farmers. Construction will be completed in 2027.

The new malting facility will be technologically advanced and will produce 50% less emissions than the industry average by using trigeneration for power, process heat and cooling. The malt will be transferred via conveyors to the brewery, which will also help to reduce emissions and costs.

The locally-sourced barley will also displace about 4 500 containers of barley that are currently imported by the brewer and will strengthen the local brewing value chain.

The company has also established agronomy programmes to support local emerging and commercial farmers through training, mentoring and commercial support.

Soufflet Malt Europe, Middle East and Africa president Guillaume Couture provides an overview of the project.
