Department of Mineral Resources and Energy regulations have expedited the integration of technologies such as proximity detection systems (PDS) aimed at mitigating workplace accidents in South African quarries and surface mines, notes PDS specialist Booyco Electronics.

Company CEO Anton Lourens asserts that the human factor is a crucial element in the successful deployment of such technologies, noting that the willingness of employees to adopt the technology and integrate the tools into daily operations is key to their effectiveness.

Lourens points out that the successful implementation of PDS technologies not only promises to enhance safety in quarries and surface mining operations but helps improve equipment availability and productivity. He stresses the need for employees to facilitate the successful adoption of PDS technologies.

Booyco Electronics says it undertakes a technical-readiness assessment to tailor the PDS technology to the unique conditions of each site. It incorporates educating stakeholders about the technology's capabilities and limitations through managing expectations and providing ongoing training and system optimisation based on user feedback to ensure the continuous effectiveness of PDS technologies.

Lourens also cautions against the unintended consequences of technology dependence, noting that proactive management and continuous education are required to maintain the safety benefits of PDS technologies.
