The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has completed the new state-of-the-art Drieziek public transport facility, in Orange Farm.

The all-weather and aesthetically pleasing Drieziek public transport facility will support local communities that primarily depend on public transport to get to places of work, education and public amenities, mainly in the Orange Farm and Stretford area, from this facility.

The facility, on the Golden Highway, features 37 holding bays, 42 loading bays, ten wash bays, private car parking, 22 trader stalls, ablution facilities, a public square for traders and a sitting area.

Located on Milife street, the facility is innovative and has easy-to-use public transport infrastructure that is functional, sustainable and durable, the JDA says.

The facility will also stimulate the local economy through employment opportunities through trading stalls. The JDA says it has ensured that the traders’ stalls accommodate informal traders selling wet and dry goods.

The square and stalls were integrated through paved and covered walkways, creating a seamless unobstructed pedestrian flow. Access from the surrounding areas will be possible on clearly marked crossings.

“The JDA’s implementation of the Drieziek public transport facility also serves as another example of how infrastructure projects can bring enormous change to the local economy and stimulate economic growth,” says JDA project implementation executive manager Siyabonga Genu.

During construction, 11 small, medium-sized and microenterprises were awarded contracts to the value of R8.5-million and 37 labourers earned more than R2-million in wages.

The CoJ Transport Department appointed the JDA to implement a new public transport facility to support the public transport industry in Orange Farm.
