Name of the Project
Coega green ammonia project.

Location
Coega Special Economic Zone, alongside the Port of Ngqura, in Gqeberha, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.

Project Owner/s
Hive Hydrogen South Africa and BuiltAfrica.

Project Description
The project aims to establish a green ammonia plant producing more than one-million tonnes a year, with its own dedicated power supply, for export to Japan, Korea and Europe.

A total of 3 480 MW power will be generated to supply the plant. The project development will also enable other independent power producers in the Beaufort West area to connect their power generation assets to the grid, which will reduce loadshedding.

The project has full environmental approval.

Potential Job Creation
The project will create more than 20 000 jobs.

Capital Expenditure
$5.8-billion (R105-billion).

Planned Start/End Date
Output of green ammonia from the new facility could start in 2029.

Latest Developments
The project has progressed from midstage to advanced-stage development.

Hive has completed pre-front-end engineering design, or pre-FEED, studies on the green hydrogen molecule portion, and has started the request for information process locally and globally with all the engineering procurement and construction companies.

The final investment decision date is still on target for the end of next year, “so a huge amount of work still to do”, Hive Hydrogen GM Colin Loubser has said.  A lot of planning processes are the mix, particularly the juggling of the molecule and the electron aspects. Loubser has added that the company must ensure that it can deliver the electrons for the molecule portion.

Construction is expected to start in 2026, as Hive can start building only once it has been through all the processes that allows it to build, and shortly after the final investment decision.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Genesis Eco-Energy (wind generation) and Hive Hydrogen; Akuo Energy Afrique; Africoast Investments and Golden Sunshine Trading (Crossroads Green Energy cluster).
