State-owned Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has announced that both lines on its North Corridor have been repaired ahead of schedule.

This is owing to the conclusion of most of the repair work on the route between Bloubank and Nhlazatshe stations, in the Northern Cape, where a train derailment on November 8 caused significant damage to the rail infrastructure and rolling stock.

The first line was brought back into operation on November 18 at 07:43, while the second line was returned to operation the next day at 09:30 – a day sooner than expected.

TFR said on November 21 that its recovery teams had been working around the clock to ensure the service line was restored to full operation as soon as possible.

The focus will now be on clearing the staged trains and the backlog on the line, following which normal operations can continue.
