UK mining junior Mwana Africa reports the company has achieved better than expected results at its Freda Rebecca gold project, in Zimbabwe, and its Zani Kodo gold project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

CEO Kalaa Mpinga reports a total of 8 224 oz of gold was produced during the quarter ended June 2011 at Freda Rebecca. To date, average monthly production was 2 741 oz, and the company had a Phase I recomissioning target of 2 500 oz/m.

The 8 224 oz was recorded despite some downtime required at Mill 1 for the replacement of the discharge grate and to allow time for the connection of Mill 2 to the common circuit production.

“As announced in June, the Phase 2 recom- missioning programme was completed with Mill 2 being successfully commissioned on time and within budget. The ramp-up to Phase 2 production levels has begun. The company has a Phase 2 yearly production target rate of 50 000 oz/y and this is expected to be reached towards the end of the third quarter of 2011,” says Mpinga.

Plant recovery has improved progressively since operations resumed, with an average recovery rate of 83% achieved during the last quarter.

In April 2011, the company announced a resource upgrade, verified by the UK arm of the South African group of consulting engineers and scientists, SRK Consulting, from just over one-million ounces to 1.67-million ounces of gold, while the inferred resource, as similarly defined, is now 0.64 million ounces.

Advanced exploration is being carried out on the company’s Zani Kodo joint venture project in the DRC, with significant mineralisation being found at both target areas.
