Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa has launched the UK-Africa Space Technology for Sustainability Global Innovation Network to foster collaboration and innovation in space technology for sustainable development across the continent.

Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa notes that the African space industry was worth $19.49-billion in August 2022 and is expected to grow to $22.64-billion by 2026.

“The African space sector is growing rapidly. This network will give South Africa, Kenya and Rwanda the opportunity to collaborate with the UK and share learnings,’ says Innovate UK Business Connect South Africa office knowledge transfer manager Alana Kruger.

The network aims to connect businesses, government, experts, and other stakeholders from the UK and Africa to drive solutions in climate change, agriculture, water security and urban planning using space technology and data.

"Space technology is revolutionising our world – from sustainability to social economic impact. It is applicable in everyday life. For example, when you use GPS to drive to work, you’re relying on space data.

“Farmers use data to determine how much water to put on their crops, so food security is reliant on space data. Our network is dedicated to harnessing this potential to create impactful, real-world solutions for African communities," Kruger says.

Key objectives of the UK-Africa Space Technology for Sustainability Global Innovation Network include promoting collaboration between the UK and African institutions to drive joint research and development initiatives; as well as knowledge and technology transfer between stakeholders to accelerate innovation and implementation of sustainable solutions.

Objectives also include capacity building to build local expertise in space technology applications, and ensuring that the benefits of space technology reach all communities.
