Solar PV distribution company SOLARWORLD Africa and solar energy solutions provider IBC SOLAR South Africa this week announced a new partnership that will bring China-headquartered solar manufacturer Tongwei's solar PV modules to the South African market.

As the first preferred distributors in the country to announce the partnership with the Chinese solar giant, SOLARWORLD and IBC say they are cementing their position at the forefront of the country's rapidly expanding commercial and industrial renewable-energy sector.

South Africa has achieved over 300 consecutive days without loadshedding as of early 2026, driven in significant part by a surge in private solar investment.

Yet energy analysts caution that the country's aging coal-fired power infrastructure creates a genuine supply gap from 2026 to 2030, while State-owned Eskom’s approved tariff trajectory continues to rise, with direct Eskom customers facing an average electricity price increase of 8.76% from April 1.

The companies note, in a joint media release, that for commercial operators, the financial case for solar has never been clearer, noting that at current tariff levels, a commercial solar installation can reach payback in as little as two to three years, with cumulative returns exceeding five times the initial investment over a decade.

Against this backdrop, the companies explain that commercial solar buyers are increasingly focused not only on price, but on the long-term performance, warranty security and bankability of the modules they install.

Installed solar capacity in South Africa grew by nearly 12% in 2024 alone, reaching close to 9 GW, with the private sector accounting for the lion's share of new installations.

The companies note that business and commercial sectors account for 71% of self-generation installations nationally, precisely the market that Tongwei's high-output modules are engineered to serve.

SOLARWORLD Africa MD Gregor Kuepper says South Africa's solar market has matured enormously over the past few years, adding that the company’s commercial and industrial customers demand more than just competitive pricing; they demand proven performance, long-term reliability and bankable quality.

"For businesses investing in solar, the choice of module has a direct impact on project performance, financing confidence, warranty security and long-term return on investment. Tongwei represents exactly that level of assurance.

“When you bring a Fortune 500, Tier 1-rated manufacturer into a market like South Africa, you're not just adding another product to the shelf; you're raising the standard for what businesses here can expect from their solar investment.

“We are proud to be the first preferred distributors to introduce Tongwei to South African buyers and to stand behind this product with our reputation," adds Kuepper.

"South Africa is an important and fast-growing market for high-quality solar solutions, and we are delighted to be working with SOLARWORLD Africa and IBC Solar South Africa as our preferred distribution partners in the country,” adds Tongwei GM of overseas business Joe Chen.

“SOLARWORLD and IBC Solar South Africa share our commitment to quality, transparency and long-term customer value. Together, we look forward to supporting South Africa's energy transition with modules that set the global benchmark for performance and reliability,” he adds.
