New direct European air connection for Windhoek
Swiss low-cost carrier Edelweiss Air, part of the Lufthansa Group, has announced the start of its Zurich-Windhoek service. The first flight on this new route was actually flown on Monday from Windhoek to Zurich, and carried 253 passengers. The service is being operated with Airbus A350 widebody airliners, and will be flown twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays.
“Zurich is located in the heart of Europe and offers excellent connections to all major cities on the continent,” highlighted Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer. “Zurich Airport is one of the most modern airports in Europe and impresses with short and convenient transfer routes. As part of the SWISS [International Air Lines] hub system, our guests also benefit from optimal connections across the entire Lufthansa Group network.”
The flights from Windhoek to Zurich are coded WK83 and leave the Namibian capital at 21:40 and arrive in Switzerland’s commercial centre at 07:35. The return flight is coded WK82 and leaves Zurich at 10:05 and reaches Windhoek at 19:40. From the middle of July to the end of October there will also be a third weekly flight, that will be operated on Wednesdays.
The A350 is the newest aircraft in the Edelweiss fleet and is more efficient with lower fuel consumption and quieter than previous generation airliners. It offers passengers a comfortable travel experience. Even so, starting next year they will be fitted with totally new cabins. This will include a new business class with greater privacy, and an expanded premium economy class. All cabin classes will have new seats. The new cabins will also have improved lighting and in-flight internet.
With these new flights, the number of services between Namibia and Europe operated by the Lufthansa Group now comes to 13 every week, all of them nonstop. These comprise daily flights between Windhoek and Frankfurt, and three weekly flights between Windhoek and Munich, all operated by Discover Airlines.
