Key focus on technical competence as competition rises
The number of medium- and heavy-steel projects in South Africa and globally should ensure medium growth for industrial holding company VBV Holdings, but the company will have to remain globally competitive to ensure its expansion, says VBV Holdings chairperson Gary van den Berg.
“A primary focus on technical capability and project management enables us to enter into joint ventures with companies on the client side. This is bolstered by our training and focus on ensuring that international industrial competence persists in South Africa,” he says.
Proper training for the work could elicit the passion necessary to sustain local skills and ensure that the company remains competitive across all spheres, he says.
VBV has taken the approach of introducing specific technology to undertake and complete what particular skills sets cannot. This approach has helped to tackle the skills shortage and simultaneously raise training levels, explains Van Den Berg.
Demand for its services in South Africa in the medium term future should remain high and VBV Holdings reports sustained demand for its products and services, he adds.
VBV’s acquisition in December of valve specialist Enserve has enabled the company to provide a range of services to the petrochemicals and power generation industries, covering all the different disciplines from fabrication to emissions control.
“All the companies under VBV Holdings have new developments to report and we are focusing on introducing technologies that can assist us in maintaining our international competitiveness.”
Further, the introduction of the Clean Fuels Bill will provide sustained business opportunities for the company in years to come and will also require it to be internationally compliant to meet the petrochemicals industry’s needs, concludes Van den Berg.
