Manufacturing output down 0.6% y/y in May

Manufacturing production decreased by 0.6% in May, compared with May 2023.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reports that the basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products and machinery and motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment divisions had made the largest negative contributions, at 1.8 percentage points and 1.2 percentage points, respectively.

Further, seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 3.2% in May, compared with April. This followed month-on-month changes of 5.2% in April and -2.3% in March.

Stats SA points out that seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales decreased by 3.5% in May, compared with April. This followed month-on-month changes of 5.8% in April and -2.5% in March.
