From Creamer Media in Johannesburg, this is the Real Economy Report.

A research and demonstration project to treat and directly reuse wastewater has been launched by Swiss researchers at the Manger Care Centre, in Benoni, Gauteng. Schalk Burger has the story.

Schalk Burger:

The project will separate and capture used water at the centre, including grey water from showers, kitchens and laundries, as well as black water captured from toilets. The aim is to reuse the water on site in nonpotable applications to support the centre's operations.

The project will generate data for the scientists at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences and at Stellenbosch University.

Source-separation of wastewater is easier at a local level, and separation makes targeted treatment of the water much simpler. The researchers intend to provide fit-for-purpose water reuse by matching the water quality to the intended applications.

Zurich University of Applied Sciences senior researcher and research manager on the project Dr Devi Bühler gives some insights into the direct water reuse project.
