Geely, CNBM team up on SA EV push
China National Building Materials South Africa (CNBM SA) and Geely Auto South Africa (Geely SA) have signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement for the coordinated development of new-energy vehicles (NEVs) and charging infrastructure, the implementation of integrated solar- storage-charging solutions, and the joint development of localised supply chains.
South Africa will serve as the core market for the agreement, but with a reach extending across Southern Africa.
CNBM SA is a subsidiary of China National Building Materials Group, and Geely SA is a subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
Through what they call “full value-chain collaboration”, the companies say that they aim to “accelerate the country’s transition towards cleaner energy, electrified mobility, and localised industrial development”.
The two Chinese enterprises promise to “anchor themselves in the South African market and deepen their presence in the new-energy sector”.
CNBM SA says it will bring to the table expertise in PV and energy storage solutions, as well as local engineering and distribution capabilities, while Geely SA will focus on NEVs and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies.
The companies note in a joint statement that the collaboration will set a benchmark model for Chinese enterprises expanding overseas – “serving Africa, while sharing responsibility for sustainable development”.
CNBM SA says the strategic partnership with Geely SA marks “a significant step” in expanding its applications in the new-energy sector and advancing its localisation strategy.
