Bateman Africa has made a donation of R600 000 to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), in Johannesburg, to assist in funding the new Wits science stadium.

The stadium is currently under construction on the university’s west campus and will increase capacity for science, engineering and technology graduates and researchers by accommodating as many as 3 400 students.

With 1 500 lecture seats, over 1 000 laboratory seats and 750 tutorial room seats, the science stadium is being built on the site of the former Charles Skeen stadium, retaining the distinctive oval of the former athletics stadium. The first lectures at the new facility will take place in July.

Bateman sub-Saharan Africa business engineering unit senior GM Frik van der Spuy said there was an urgent need for industry to play a positive role in promoting science, technology and engineering for the sustainable development of South Africa, the country which has been highly important in the growth of Bate-man, and to meet the increasing need for skills in the industry in which Bateman operates.

“It is one of Bateman’s social investment priorities to partner with suitable organisations, such as universities, to invest in the development of future talent – a partnership that Bateman believes needs to be much more than financial donations. “The company believes it can play a vital role in bridging the gap between a university education and the practical needs of industry by making the company’s extensive source of skills available to the universities for mentoring and tutoring students and to provide guest lectures at the universities,” said Van der Spuy.
