Cape Town opens R434m Coastal Park waste recycling sorting facility

The new Coastal Park Material Recovery Facility
Inside the Material Recovery Facility
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has cut the ribbon on the new Coastal Park Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Muizenberg.
The R434-million facility is designed to handle recyclables from the city’s door-to-door recycling collection programme.
Once collected, the mixed recyclables – such as plastics, paper, cardboard, glass and metals – are separated and prepared for re-sale to manufacturing industries, where they are used to manufacture new products.
Hill-Lewis says this effort forms part of the city’s long-term strategy to increase recycling, and to extend the lifespan of landfill sites by recovering valuable materials from the waste stream.
The facility already receives 25 t of recyclables a day. This will increase, when at full capacity, to 65 t of recyclables a day.
Sixty Capetonians are employed at the recycling facility, with another 20 staff working at the collection point.
This will expand to around 160 jobs at full operation, with more jobs created downstream in the manufacturing chain.
“The Coastal Park facility is a major step forward in the city’s journey towards better waste management and a robust recycling economy,” says Hill-Lewis.
“This facility supports our separation-at-source programme and helps ensure that materials with economic value are recovered and returned to the economy rather than being lost to landfills,” adds City of Cape Town Urban Waste Management MMC Grant Twigg.
Twigg encourages residents to continue separating their recyclable material at home, and to make use of available recycling services and drop-off facilities.
“The success of facilities like the Coastal Park MRF depends on residents continuing to separate their recyclables. Every household that participates plays a role in helping Cape Town become a cleaner, more sustainable city.”
