Booyco Engineering leads mining sector with purpose-built HVAC systems

Mining remains one of the toughest operating environments in the world, placing extreme demands on both personnel and equipment. Heat, dust, humidity, vibration and extended operating hours combine to create conditions that require robust purpose-built climate control solutions rather than adapted automotive systems. For more than four decades, Booyco Engineering has led the field in specialised heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) and climate control systems engineered specifically for both underground and surface mining vehicles.

With extensive experience across South Africa and global mining markets, heavy-duty HVAC manufacturer Booyco Engineering designs and manufactures HVAC systems that prioritise operator safety, equipment reliability and compliance with increasingly stringent mine health and safety regulations. These solutions are purpose-engineered to perform in environments characterised by high dust loads, corrosive atmospheres, constant vibration, restricted installation spaces and extreme thermal conditions.

Underground Mining Applications

Booyco Engineering’s underground HVAC units are available in a range of duty ratings to suit diverse vehicle categories including personnel carriers, utility vehicles, load-haul-dump machines, rock drills, scalers and telescopic handlers. Systems typically deliver cooling capacities from 5.5 kW up to 12 kW in ambient temperatures of up to 46 °C, depending on the application, while maintaining positive cab pressure and clean-air delivery.

This is achieved through specialised cyclonic dust scavenging filtration, high efficiency airflow designs allowing for over-pressurisation in sufficiently sealed vehicles thus limiting the ingress of dust, fumes and diesel particulate matter into the operator’s breathing zone. Maintaining cab pressurisation and air quality is critical in underground environments where heat, humidity and airborne contaminants can rapidly exceed acceptable occupational exposure limits.

A recent international application highlights the durability and reliability of Booyco Engineering’s underground technology. At a large underground mining operation, a low profile 30 man personnel carrier equipped with a Booyco climate control system operates for up to 20 hours a day in high-heat, high-humidity conditions. Operating continuously in a decline shaft, the vehicle transports crews to and from working areas and also functions as an underground recuperation chamber, allowing personnel to recover from extreme ambient temperatures. Despite the severe duty cycle, the HVAC system consistently maintains safe air quality and comfortable cab temperatures, supporting both worker wellbeing and sustained productivity.

Central to the performance of Booyco Engineering’s underground systems is the use of dual-system designs and purpose-engineered filtration. High efficiency Sy-Klone filtration systems remove airborne dust and contaminants before air reaches the operator, ensuring compliance with mandated health standards even in gas-laden and dusty environments.

Surface Mining and Heavy Equipment Applications

On surface mines, climate control challenges are different but equally demanding. Large haul trucks, excavators, dozers, graders and drilling rigs operate in direct sun, high ambient temperatures and extreme dust conditions, often for long shifts with limited downtime. In these applications, HVAC systems must deliver high cooling capacity while remaining resilient to dust ingress, vibration and thermal cycling.

Booyco Engineering’s surface-mining HVAC solutions are engineered to deliver consistent performance in these harsh conditions with higher airflow volumes, reinforced condensers and evaporators and filtration systems designed to handle severe dust loading. Systems are configured to suit both original equipment manufactured installations and retrofit applications, allowing mine operators to standardise climate control across mixed fleets.

By maintaining stable cab temperatures and clean air, these systems reduce operator fatigue, improve alertness and support safer machine operation. This is particularly important in surface operations where long haul cycles, repetitive tasks and high ambient heat place significant strain on machine operators.

Designed for Durability and Maintainability

Across both underground and surface applications, Booyco Engineering’s HVAC systems are built for longevity. Corrosion-protected materials, reinforced housings, sealed electrical components and vibration-resistant mounting systems ensure reliable operation in demanding mining conditions. Intelligent control interfaces allow operators to adjust airflow and temperature easily, while maintenance-friendly designs provide accessible components and service intervals aligned with intensive mining schedules.

Across Africa and other global mining regions, Booyco Engineering continues to set the benchmark in purpose-designed HVAC and climate control technology. From underground personnel carriers to heavy surface mining equipment, its solutions enable mines to maintain safe working environments, improve productivity and reduce equipment downtime in some of the world’s most challenging conditions.
