Automotive Industry Development Centre

The Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) is a South African organisation established to support the growth and competitiveness of the domestic automotive manufacturing sector. It operates under the mandate of assisting component manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers and suppliers in improving production capability and meeting global quality standards. The centre's geographic focus is primarily South Africa, though its work intersects with regional trade frameworks such as the Southern African Customs Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area. Key functions include enterprise development, supplier development programmes, and support for localisation initiatives aimed at increasing local content in vehicle production. The AIDC collaborates with bodies such as the Industrial Development Corporation and the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers on broader industrial policy goals. It has taken an interest in emerging areas including electric vehicles, micromobility and the beneficiation of critical minerals like lithium and cobalt relevant to future automotive supply chains. The centre also engages with challenges facing manufacturers, such as loadshedding and the need for renewable energy solutions to maintain production continuity. It supports mechanisms like the Localisation Support Fund to help smaller automotive suppliers scale their operations. The AIDC was established to strengthen South Africa's position within the global automotive value chain and to promote industrialisation through targeted support programmes.
