3D Printing

3D printing is an additive manufacturing technology that builds three-dimensional objects layer by layer from digital design files. The process works by depositing material—typically plastic, metal, resin, or composite—in successive thin layers that fuse together to form a solid structure. Unlike traditional subtractive manufacturing, which cuts away material from a block, 3D printing adds material only where needed, reducing waste and enabling complex geometries that would be difficult or impossible to machine conventionally. Applications span prototyping, tooling, custom parts production, medical implants, aerospace components, and construction. Industries adopting the technology include automotive, healthcare, aerospace, consumer goods, and energy, where it is used to produce spare parts, lightweight components, and bespoke devices. The technology has matured from rapid prototyping in the 1980s to direct production of end-use parts, with advances in materials, speed, and scale driving broader commercial adoption. Significance lies in its potential to decentralise manufacturing, shorten supply chains, and enable on-demand production. Adoption is growing in both developed and emerging markets, supported by falling equipment costs and expanding material options. The technology continues to evolve with innovations in multi-material printing, larger build volumes, and integration with digital design and scanning tools.
