Vancouver-based Spanish Mountain Gold has partnered with technology group Andritz and utility BC Hydro to reduce the carbon intensity of its proposed namesake mine in the Cariboo gold corridor, in British Columbia.

With a goal of building one of Canada’s most sustainable mines, Spanish Gold will use Andritz’s simulation software for process optimisation, energy management and operator training.

“Through this partnership, our aim is to redefine the mining industry's approach to energy generation, consumption, and environmental responsibility by lowering carbon intensity to ensure we build the greenest gold processing facility in the industry,” said Mountain Gold president, CEO and director Peter Mah.

Andritz VP for digital products and solutions for mining and mineral processing in Canada, Graham Ethier, added that the use of technology helped to reduce energy demand and drive positive changes in industry sustainability.

The group’s IDEAS simulation software will enable the mine to analyse energy consumption, optimise process flowsheets and predict power demand accurately.

In addition, Spanish Mountain plans to use the IDEAS simulation software to train local operators.
