Name of the Project
Small modular nuclear (SMR) pilot plant.

Location
The pilot plant, comparable in size to an upright shipping container, can be built entirely underground or on an existing industrial site. Proposed locations include the Salmisaari caves, in Helsinki; the Huuhanmäki caves, in Kuopio; and the power plant sites at Kymijärvi and Teivaanmäki in Lahti, all in Finland.

Project Owner/s
Steady Energy.

Project Description
The project will result in the construction of Finland’s first SMR pilot plant.

The pilot will serve as a full-scale, operational model of the Finnish-designed SMR unit. Unlike the actual power plant, the pilot unit will use an electric element to produce heat inside the reactor capsule instead of nuclear fuel. The main purpose is to test operational features and establish the necessary supply chains with various manufacturers to build actual plants.

Potential Job Creation

Capital Expenditure
About €15-million to €20-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The construction of the first operational plant is projected to start by 2028, with the first unit expected to be operational by 2030.

Latest Developments
Final evaluations of potential sites are under way, with a decision expected in the second half of 2024. Thereafter, detailed planning and tendering for construction will start.
