Seabourne Logistics Partners with MyWalk Project to Transform Hospital Waste into School Shoes, Fostering Sustainability and Social Impact

17th July 2024

Seabourne Logistics, a prominent player in the logistics industry, is proud to announce its collaboration with the MyWalk Project, an initiative aimed at repurposing disposable hospital drip bags, oxygen masks and associated tubing into brand new school shoes. This innovative partnership not only addresses the pressing issue of healthcare waste but also provides disadvantaged children with a vital necessity for their education.

Research reveals that over 1 million children in our country lack access to a basic pair of shoes.  Mr Elijah Mhlanga, Chief Director of National and Provincial Communication in the Department of Basic Education firmly believes that school shoes are a basic necessity.  “If learners do not have adequate footwear, this can introduce ongoing obstacles to their education including bullying and harassment at school. Having school shoes can enhance the schooling experience for learners. Many learners unfortunately still walk long distances to and from school without shoes, facing a daily threat of sustaining cuts and infections.”

Recognising the importance of footwear in enhancing the schooling experience, Seabourne Logistics is committed to supporting initiatives like MyWalk that promote dignity and equality among learners.

The MyWalk project, led by Adcock Ingram Critical Care and Netcare, ingeniously transforms single-use PVC drip bags, oxygen masks, and associated tubing into durable, 100% recycled and recyclable school shoes. By repurposing medical waste, this collaboration not only contributes to reducing healthcare waste but also mitigates environmental harm caused by greenhouse gas emissions.

Phumzile Dlamini, Seabourne's HR Manager, emphasises the alignment of the MyWalk project with the company's commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. "This initiative exemplifies embracing a circular economy, showcasing how adopting green solutions can positively impact society while meeting business needs," says Dlamini.

As part of its involvement, Seabourne Logistics launched an internal fundraising challenge, encouraging staff and internal stakeholders to donate R35 to the cause. The company pledged to match the total amount donated by its employees, doubling the impact of their contributions. This commitment reflects Seabourne's dedication to fostering positive social change and supporting sustainable initiatives that create a lasting impact.  The internal challenge raised more than 500 pairs of shoes.

External Collaboration

Seabourne is further extending its invitation for all external stakeholders to rise to the occasion and support them in this incredible initiative.  At only R35 per pair of shoes, companies can really make a difference and give a child a gift of dignity.

Support the cause

The MyWalk project not only provides essential footwear to children in need but also serves as a beacon of hope for a brighter, more sustainable future. Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, Seabourne Logistics continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment.
