AMSOL in Ghana plays an important role in the country's maritime industry; delivering marine fuel by tanker to international oil companies and clients in the fishing industry off Tema on behalf of the Ghana Oil Company (GOIL).
Recently, during a drydock project that took place in Tema, the company’s tanker was renamed 'Densu River’; symbolizing AMSOL’s commitment to indigenisation.
The naming ceremony, which took place in the Port of Tema today, was attended by key stakeholders including Hon. Kwame Osei-Prempeh (Group CEO of GOIL), HE Grace Jeanet Mason (South African High Commissioner to Ghana), and Mrs Sandra Opoku (Tema Port Director), amongst many other dignitaries.
This event marked not only the change in the tanker’s name but also celebrated the partnership between AMSOL and GOIL. After three years of dedicated service to clients, this ceremony reflects AMSOL's commitment and roots in Ghana's maritime industry.
For Kojo Quainoo, CEO of AMSOL Ghana, the renaming of the tanker symbolises a significant milestone in the company's history:
"By naming the vessel 'Densu River,' we not only embrace its local identity but also its promising future in Ghanaian waters."
This sentiment underlines the importance of the recent local drydocking project conducted in Tema; emphasizing the vessel's connection to the economy and its people. Mr Quainoo further reiterated that the vessel’s crew is majority Ghanaian; boosting the country’s local economy.
Addressing the gathering, HE Grace Jeanet Mason stated that she was excited for this step by AMSOL Ghana as it represented a very significant milestone in the maritime industry; not just for Ghana but for Africa as a whole.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of GOIL, Hon. Kwame Osei-Prempeh, highlighted that the naming of the vessel further solidified relations between AMSOL Ghana and GOIL as the bunker tanker will improve GOIL’s operations.
Local drydocking and renaming of the vessel was not just a logistical process but also a strategic decision that strengthens AMSOL's presence in Ghana. Utilising the local supply chain for projects of this nature reflects a commitment to the economy and a desire to develop the value chain.
The renamed 'Densu River' stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to grow the Ghanaian maritime industry while also honoring the country’s rich heritage. The Densu River basin, after which the tanker was named, covers over 2400 square kilometers and serves cities and communities within the Greater Accra Region, Eastern Region and the Central Region of Ghana. The river is not only an essential source of water but also holds cultural and historical importance.
