Mondi launches tender for solar power at Richards Bay plant

Paper products manufacturer Mondi’s Richards Bay mill has issued a request for proposals for independent power producers to design, build, own and maintain solar PV power plants of up to 10 MW at the site.

Mondi, which aims to use more green energy, invites companies with experience in developing, building and operating embedded solar facilities to apply at www.independentenergypool.com.

Further documentation will be made available on the same website from July 30, with participants being urged to submit binding offers by no later than August 23.

Mondi has been focused on reducing environmental impacts at the plant, from air quality to water consumption through solid waste reduction and other solutions.

The Richards Bay plant also has a 13.2 MW biomass project on site, with its electricity having offset more than 18 000 t/y of CO2 emissions.

The group aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions by 46.2% and Scope 3 emissions by 27.5% by 2030, compared with a 2019 baseline.
