Project Owner/s
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), which signed a terminal operator agreement with 100% black-owned Mnambithi Terminals (part of the Mnambithi Group) for the development of a liquid bulk facility in May 2024.
Project Description
The project will result in improved operational efficiencies at the precinct as TNPA pursues several tactical initiatives to drive volume recovery and improve efficiencies across its divisions through its business-wide recovery plan.
The new terminal will feature direct rail and road loading, as well as an on-site truck staging area with automated loading systems, which will ensure maximum operational efficiencies while alleviating road congestion in the Maydon Wharf precinct.
The project will be completed in two phases.
The first phase will entail the demolition of the existing structure, including foundations; the installation of tanks; associated infrastructure; a road-loading gantry; and the bulk transfer of pipelines connecting Mnambithi Terminals to the relevant berths to receive liquid cargo.
The second phase will entail the installation of the remaining tanks and associated
infrastructure.
Potential Job Creation
The liquid bulk facility is expected to create 50 to 100 direct and about 400 indirect job opportunities for communities surrounding the Port of Durban from the project’s inception phase.

The project entails an investment of R1.3-billion.
