Project Description
The project includes Project Phoenix, a fuel cell manufacturing facility that will be located in the Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ),  of the wider Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub development concept in the SEZ. The facility will have a manufacturing capacity of 125 MW/y. Capacity will be increased based on demand.

The fuel cell supply chain includes a 50 MW fuel stack manufacturing facility. Mitochondria has completed a localisation study to create a strategy to locate components in their supply chain either in the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub or in South Africa. 

Potential Job Creation
Project Phoenix is expected to create an estimated 400 jobs in Year 1. The fuel cell supply chain is expected to create 1 000 jobs.

Capital Expenditure
Capital expenditure is estimated at R2-billion for Project Phoenix. Mitochondria Energy has committed R4.3-billion in investments to develop the Hydrogen Innovation Hub.

Planned Start/End Date
Full-scale commercialisation is expected in 2028.

Latest Developments
Mitochondria has recently embarked on developing an electrolyser system for stationary applications.
