Project Description
The project includes Project Phoenix, a fuel cell manufacturing facility that will be located in the Vaal Special Economic Zone, forming part of the wider Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub development concept. The facility will have a manufacturing capacity of 250 MW/y.

The fuel cell supply chain includes a 250 MW inverter manufacturing facility and a 250 MW fuel stack manufacturing facility.

During the phases to follow, electrolysers and fuel cells for mobility applications will be developed. There will be a strong focus on the supply chain of the new hydrogen economy.

Potential Job Creation
Project Phoenix is expected to create between 400 and 800 permanent jobs.

The fuel cell supply chain is expected to create 1 000 jobs.

Capital Expenditure
Project Phoenix is estimated to require capital expenditure of R2-billion.

The inverter manufacturing facility is estimated at R50-million and the fuel stack manufacturing facility about R3-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Full-scale commercialisation is expected in 2028.
