Five aircraft at Durban's King Shaka International Airport (KIA) had to be refuelled from lorries after the airport's fuel system broke down on Tuesday, a spokesperson said.

The cause of the failure was not immediately known, but it was expected to be resolved later in the day, spokesperson Colin Naidoo said.

Inbound flights were not affected as they landed with enough fuel to take them to their next destination. Tankers were being used to refuel other planes.

"We have asked the service provider to look at the problem and we are hoping to have the machines up and running. We hope to have them operational in about two hours time," he said at noon.
