Equites starts wheeling power from distribution centre to head office in Cape Town

Equites' distribution centre, in Parow

Property developer Equites Property Fund has officially started wheeling renewable energy onto Cape Town’s grid from solar panels atop its newly built distribution centre in Parow.

The company is among the first to begin wheeling energy for the municipal grid, with its current offtaker being a commercial office block on the Foreshore, where Equites is headquartered.

The solar panels on top of the 17 653 m2 distribution centre will supply Equites’ head office with 100% of its daytime energy requirements, as well as other tenants in the block.

Equites environment, social and governance offer Irshaad Wadvalla says the first flow of energy from the Equites property to the city centre building under this wheeling project marks the culmination of nearly two years of engagement and planning.

The company will pursue further renewable energy generation projects to provide green energy to more businesses, particularly those that do not occupy energy efficient buildings and need to lower their carbon emissions and electricity costs.

“Our goal is to use existing infrastructure and our expertise to supply other businesses across South Africa with renewable energy without them requiring capital expenditure and, with that, to alleviate demand on the grid and to reduce carbon emissions,” Wadvalla concludes.
