Decentral completes installation of gas-powered minigrid for manufacturer in Pretoria

Distributed energy solutions company Decentral Energy has installed a 1.3 MW stationary gas engine and diesel generator at a fast-moving consumer goods manufacturer’s premises, in Rosslyn, Pretoria.

The solution enables the factory to expand and reduce its carbon footprint, while allowing independence from the national grid.

The client was unable to grow owing to unreliable and insufficient power supply in its industrial area, particularly given its continuous production processes and the substantial costs associated with line stoppages during loadshedding or other electricity infrastructure issues.

The Guascor Energy 56HM stationary gas engine, coupled with the Marelli Motori MJB 450 MB4 1 500 kVA generator, operates as an islanded minigrid.

Notably, the gas engine delivers power at an operating cost lower than the city’s grid electricity. Additionally, the lower carbon intensity offered by gas, compared with the coal-fired electricity from the grid, reduces the factory’s carbon footprint.

Decentral also commissioned a 3 MW gas engine and alternator set at a biogas plant outside Pretoria. Decentral generator team head Louis Moll says liquefied natural gas (LNG) offers a cleaner transition fuel and biogas effectively provides dispatchable renewable energy.

The company also provides solar PV and battery storage solutions in addition to LNG, biogas and diesel solutions.
