The Malawi government has secured $30-million from international financiers for the construction of three teacher training colleges.

The financiers include the Saudi Fund for Development, which has provided $12-million, the Organisation of Petroelum Exporting Countries Fund for International Development and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, which are making available $11-million and $7-million respectively.

Malawi Finance Minister Ken Lipenga says the colleges are to be built in Rumphi, in the northern region; Mchinji, in the central region; and Chikhwawa, in the south. He says the process of procuring service providers for the projects is “ready to start”.

Lipenga says the Malawi government is looking for funds for the construction of more teacher training colleges in the country.

“The pupil-to-teacher ratio is very high in Malawi and is growing rapidly. We want to construct more colleges to [arrest] the situation and we hope more finan- ciers will come in after these three,” he says.
