Project Description
The project comprises an 80 MW solar energy facility at Northam’s Zondereinde mine. 

Power from the facility will be supplied behind the meter and will not be exposed to load-curtailment events. Connection points will be made to the shaft infrastructure and metallurgical complex. The facility is intended to improve security of power supply, reduce energy costs and lower the mine’s carbon footprint.

The project forms part of Northam’s broader energy strategy, which focuses on energy security, cost control and carbon reduction. Northam has stated that its energy policy aims to reduce reliance on Eskom through a cost-effective mix of Eskom supply and alternative electricity sources. 

A self-build 250 MWh battery park is planned at Zondereinde to complement the 80 MW solar facility.
