Ekurhuleni outlines plans for tackling unemployment head-on
The Ekurhuleni municipality plans to tackle the high levels of unemployment by creating integrated transport infrastructure and a modernised manufacturing sector as well as focusing on environment-related projects, as part of its review of the Growth and Development Strategy 2055 for the city.
Mayor Mondli Gungubele highlighted the strategy, besides other initiatives, during his recent state of the city address. Plans include focusing on vigorous by-law enforcement and cleaning of lakes and dams to create an investor-friendly environment.
“The environment improvement plans are part of the city’s township development strategy that goes beyond creating cleaner and safer areas, but would also ignite the massive economic potential that resonates in townships,” he said.
Gungubele added that the city was focus-ing its built environment investments on devel-oping transport infrastructure to ensure an efficient network. “This will be done through the development of our Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPT), which is under way. Further announcements about the different phases of the IRPT and timeframes will be made available during the city budget speech.”
The municipality currently contributes about 19% to the total economic output of Gauteng province. “We are confident that our eco-nomic development initiatives will create a condusive investment atmosphere, leading to an increase in the city’s share of the provincial gross domestic product,” he said.
