Hydrogen-focused startup HYENA has successfully developed a process to convert liquid petroleum gas (LPG) into clean electricity using its innovative POWER POD system at its new development facility in Cape Town.

“We’re revolutionising clean energy by converting LPG into electricity with our innovative POWER POD system,” says HYENA CEO Niels Luchters.

Originating from the University of Cape Town, HYENA’s POWER POD system generates electricity from LPG without combustion by converting LPG into hydrogen, which is then used in a fuel cell.

HYENA recently achieved a significant milestone by operating its system at its design output of 5 kW.

“What sets us apart is our distinctive approach to integrate new energy technology with existing LPG infrastructure, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional diesel generators,” Luchters explains.

Hydrogen fuel cells offer numerous benefits over conventional electricity generation methods, including quiet operation, reduced maintenance and better reliability. However, the lack of infrastructure for hydrogen storage and distribution has hindered their widespread adoption, specifically in sub-Saharan Africa.

Fortunately, HYENA can address this challenge by leveraging the existing LPG storage and distribution infrastructure.

“We’re revolutionising clean energy by converting LPG into electricity with our innovative POWER POD system. By leveraging existing infrastructure, we’re overcoming barriers to widespread adoption and shaping the future of sustainable power solutions,” Luchters says.

The POWER POD comprises a hydrogen generator and a fuel cell. In the hydrogen generator, hydrogen is extracted from LPG and water through a series of reactions. The fuel cell then converts hydrogen and air into electrical power and water, HYENA co-founder and chief product officer Dr Jack Fletcher explains.

Currently, HYENA is preparing for field trials and exploring commercial opportunities, with plans to scale up production to support the growing need for reliable, standalone power solutions.

Additionally, the company is working towards the development of a renewable form of LPG derived from captured carbon dioxide and green hydrogen, further enhancing the environmental benefits of its POWER POD technology.

As the lead industry partner in the multi-institutional, transdisciplinary German-South Africa research partnership consortium GreenQUEST, HYENA is driving the development for a greener fuel for its POWER POD, the company concludes.
