Project Description
Sibanye-Stillwater is implementing a major portfolio of renewable-energy projects in South Africa. Its goal is for 600 MW of renewable capacity to be operational by late 2026, with 407 MW of solar and wind projects under construction, including:

  • the Castle Wind Farm (89 MW), in the Northern Cape;
  • the Witberg Wind Farm (103 MW), in the Western Cape;
  • the Springbok solar project (150 MW), in the Northern Cape; and
  • the Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm (140MW), in the Western Cape.

The project portfolio is expected to supplement an estimated 30% of Sibanye-Stillwater’s total electrical energy requirements and yield material cost savings.

Capital Expenditure
The total portfolio will cost between R12-billion and R14-billion, being fully funded by third-parties through varying-tenor power purchase agreements entered into between Sibanye-Stillwater and the project companies.

Castle Wind Farm will cost R2.4-billion to implement, Witberg Wind Farm is estimated at R2.4-billion, the Springbok solar project is estimated at R2.8-billion and Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm is estimated at R4.9-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The Castle Wind Farm and Springbok solar plant reached commercial operation in March 2025 and September 2025 respectively.

Witberg Wind Farm started construction in December 2023 and Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm in May 2024.

Latest Developments
The Witberg Wind Farm is expected to enter commercial operation in the third quarter of 2026, and the Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm in the fourth quarter of 2026.
