Rooppur nuclear power plant, Bangladesh – update

Name of the Project
Rooppur nuclear power plant (NPP).
Location
Ishwardi Upazilla, 160 km from Dhaka, in Bangladesh.
Project Owner/s
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC).
Project Description
The Rooppur NPP will comprise two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2 400 MW.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to meet 10% to 12% of Bangladesh’s electricity demand and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
$12.65-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
Unit 1 is scheduled for completion in 2024 and Unit 2 in 2025.
Latest Developments
Rosatom has reported that fresh nuclear fuel has been loaded into Rooppur’s Unit 1 reactor.
The loading started on April 28, 2026, with 163 fuel assemblies sequentially loaded into the reactor core. This is one of the key stages in preparing the unit power startup.
The next stage will be the installation of the upper reactor unit and connecting all necessary in-core instrumentation systems.
Rosatom is expected to conduct further tests to prove the reliability and safe operation of all process systems.
In the near future, the reactor will be brought to its minimum controllable power level, which will result in a gradual increase in power. This work precedes the power startup and trial commercial operation of the Rooppur NPP Unit 1.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Various divisions of Rosatom are in charge of manufacturing reactor vessels, steam generators, pumps, heat-exchangers and other equipment.
