Name of the Project
Pusher tug of the future.

Location
Netherlands.

Project Owner/s
thyssenkrupp Veerhaven, logistics subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe.

Project Description
thyssenkrupp Veerhaven wants to make its fleet of pusher tugs climate-friendly with a new generation of pusher boats.

The seven pusher tugs currently operated by the company travel between Europoort Rotterdam and the Ruhr area throughout the year, transporting an estimated 18-million metric tons of raw materials for the iron and steel
plants.

The company plans to use alternative fuels, such as methanol, to power the tugs, which could reduce the fleet’s CO2 emissions by about 80% of current CO2 emissions.

The planned tugs will also be optimised for lower water levels because the level of the Rhine river tends to drop below critical levels more frequently during the summer months, owing to climate change.
