The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Executive Council has resolved to establish a technical committee to deal with debt owed by government to municipalities, which is said to be R2.8-billion.

The committee will see to it that those debts are cleared and, where there are areas of disputes, they are resolved immediately.

Spokesperson for the Office of the Premier Lennox Mabaso says Premier Nomusa Dube-Nqube is at the forefront of ensuring that the province creates financially viable and sustainable municipalities.

Mabaso adds that the provincial government views the issue of nonpayment of debts to the 54 municipalities in the province in a serious light.
