Name and Location
Ethanol/electricity cogeneration plant, Manica, Mozambique.

Project Description
The project entails the construction of a cogeneration plant, in the province of Manica, in the Sussendenga district. The plant is expected to produce some 150-million litres of anhydrous fuel-grade ethanol for export and domestic consumption.

The plant will employ sugar cane as the primary feedstock and sweet sorghum as a secondary feedstock. The facility could also produce 10 000 t/y of dry soya beans.

It is envisaged that some 25 000 ha of cultivated land will have to be developed to deliver the feedstock to the plant and produce the food crops. Also considered as part of the project is a 32 MW/h electricity facility fuelled by high-pressure bagasse.

Value
The total project cost is estimated at $330-million; however, these cost assumptions are yet to be confirmed.

Duration
The commissioning of the plant could take place 44 months after the start of construction works.

Client
Envalor Limitade, an affiliation of InfraCo, which is a donor-financed project development company established and funded by the Private Infrastructure Development Group, comprising the development agencies of the governments of the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, the UK and the World Bank.
