B&T Steel Construction builds backbone of Lumwana super pit expansion
When major gold producer Barrick Gold Corporation set its sights on transforming the Lumwana copper mine in Zambia's North-Western Province into a world-class, long-life copper producer, it needed a partner capable of delivering precision-engineered steel infrastructure on time, in sequence, and without room for error. That partner is specialist structural steel fabricator B&T Steel Construction.
The Mpumalanga-based fabricator has built a long-standing reputation as a trusted steel construction partner for the mine's non-processing infrastructure (NPI), with 17 structures delivered to date. This work sits within the broader context of the $2-billion "super pit" expansion, though B&T Steel's relationship with Barrick predates the expansion itself.
Infrastructure that Keeps a Mine Moving
In large-scale mining, the production headlines typically belong to processing plants, haul fleets, and ore grades. But experienced operators know the truth: a mine is only as efficient as the infrastructure supporting its workforce and machinery. NPI, which include workshops, maintenance bays, and service facilities, form the operational backbone that keeps every other system running.
For the Lumwana expansion, B&T Steel has delivered a range of these critical structures, including the main diesel workshop, a multi-workshop, and a service workshop. Each has been purpose-designed to meet the demanding requirements of a Tier-1 mining asset operating in a remote, high-humidity environment.
"The potential of the Lumwana expansion is rooted in its infrastructure," says B&T Steel director Bryan Wilken. "Precision fabrication and logistical planning prevent the costly delays that plague remote greenfield projects."
The company's wide-span portal frame designs are central to this philosophy. By eliminating internal columns, B&T Steel creates clear-span maintenance bays that allow for the unhindered movement of heavy vehicles and oversized equipment. In a high-production mining environment, the ability to manoeuvre a massive haul truck into a maintenance bay without obstruction is an operational necessity.
Solwezi and the broader North-Western Province of Zambia present a formidable challenge for structural steel. High ambient humidity, corrosive mining byproducts, and significant temperature variation all accelerate the degradation of inadequately prepared steelwork.
Logistics as a Competitive Advantage
Delivering structural steel to a remote mine site in landlocked Zambia can be challenging. The company's approach is methodical and deliberately sequenced. Columns and holding-down bolts are dispatched on the first load, allowing site rigger teams to begin foundation and column erection while subsequent loads are still in transit. Roof rafters follow, and lipped channels and sheeting complete the delivery sequence — meaning that by the time the final truck arrives on site, the structure is already rising from the ground.
This load-planning discipline is a deliberate strategy to eliminate idle time for site rigger crews. In a remote location where labour mobilisation costs are significant, every hour of productive work protected by intelligent logistics planning translates directly into project value.
B&T Steel's work at Lumwana has reinforced its position as a specialist in cross-border steel construction. The company manages the full project scope in-house — from structural design, detailing, and fabrication through to painting, metal cladding, and the coordination of cross-border delivery. This vertically integrated model reduces interface risk and gives customers a single accountable partner across all phases of delivery.
The ability to execute consistently at this scale, across international borders, in one of Africa's most remote mining regions, has made B&T Steel a trusted name for Tier-1 mining developers operating in the SADC region.
The Lumwana super pit expansion is a long-term infrastructure programme that will define the operational capability of one of Barrick's flagship copper assets for decades to come. The confidence Barrick has placed in B&T Steel speaks to a relationship built on consistent execution rather than promise.
In a sector where the cost of delay is measured in millions and the margin for error is zero, B&T Steel Construction continues to prove that South African fabrication expertise can deliver world-class outcomes on the world's most demanding projects.
