South African renewable-energy company Anthem reports that it has reached financial close on the 20 MW Tsamela solar PV project in Eswatini, which is seeking to increase domestic generation capacity so as to reduce reliance on electricity imports.

The project is reportedly the first of five developments selected under the Eswatini Electricity Regulatory Authority’s Solar PV procurement programme to reach financial close.

The Eswatini Electricity Company is the offtaker under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

Located in the Hhohho region near Ngwenya, the project was awarded to Anthem following a competitive tender process.

It includes the Public Service Pension Fund as a strategic partner and Standard Bank Eswatini and Standard Bank South Africa as senior lenders.

The site spans about 44.8 ha and the facility will comprise more than 37 000 bifacial solar panels.

Alensy Energy Solutions has been appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor and construction began in April, with commercial operations expected within 15 months.

Once operational, the project is expected to generate in the region of 47 788 MWh in its first year.

Anthem says that about 150 jobs will be created during construction, with a further 10 roles during operations.

Anthem CEO James Cumming says the company greatly values the work it is doing in Eswatini, adding that its growing number of projects in the country will have real macro- and micro-economic impact.

Together with Anthem’s 13.5 MW Lower Maguduza hydro project, currently under construction, Tsamela will contribute to just over 30% of Eswatini’s internal generation capacity.
