Thoko Didiza

Thoko Didiza is a South African politician who serves as Speaker of the National Assembly, a position she has held since June 2024. She is a senior member of the African National Congress (ANC) and has been a Member of Parliament for multiple terms. Didiza previously served as Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs from 1999 to 2006 under President Thabo Mbeki, where she oversaw significant land reform and agricultural development initiatives. She later held the position of Minister of Public Works from 2010 to 2018 under President Jacob Zuma. Her career has been marked by a focus on rural development, land redistribution and infrastructure delivery. As Speaker, she presides over parliamentary proceedings, maintains order in the National Assembly and ensures the institution's independence and effectiveness. Didiza has been a prominent figure in South African politics for over two decades, navigating the country's complex political landscape through successive administrations. Her appointment as Speaker came during a period of coalition politics following the 2024 general election, in which the ANC lost its outright majority for the first time since 1994. She is known for her measured approach to governance and her experience in managing large government departments. Didiza's political trajectory reflects the evolution of the ANC's leadership cadre from the post-apartheid era through to contemporary South African democracy.
