Portugal

Portugal is a country located in south-western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by Spain to the east and north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south. The capital and largest city is Lisbon. Portugal has a population of about 10.3-million people and operates as a unitary semi-presidential republic. The economy is diversified, with key sectors including tourism, services, manufacturing, agriculture and renewable energy. Portugal is a significant exporter of wine, cork, textiles, footwear and automotive components. The currency is the euro, which Portugal adopted in 1999 as a founding member of the eurozone. The country is a member of the European Union, having joined in 1986, as well as NATO, the United Nations and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Portugal's government type is a parliamentary democracy with a president serving as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. Historically, Portugal was a major maritime power during the Age of Discovery in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, establishing a vast colonial empire that included territories in Africa, Asia and South America. The country transitioned to democracy in 1974 following the Carnation Revolution, which ended decades of authoritarian rule. Today Portugal is recognised for its stable democratic institutions, strategic Atlantic location and growing focus on renewable energy and technology sectors.
