Australia

Australia is a country and continent located in the Southern Hemisphere, comprising the mainland, Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. The capital is Canberra, whilst Sydney and Melbourne are the largest cities. With a population of about 26-million, Australia has a highly developed mixed-market economy with a gross domestic product of more than $1.5-trillion, making it one of the wealthiest nations per capita globally. The economy is dominated by services, mining, agriculture and energy exports, with key commodities including iron-ore, coal, gold, lithium, natural gas and copper. Australia is the world's largest exporter of iron-ore and liquefied natural gas, and a leading producer of critical minerals essential for renewable energy and battery technologies. The currency is the Australian dollar. Australia operates as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy, with governance shared between the Commonwealth government and six states and two territories. The country is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the United Nations, the G20, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Australia's resource sector has been central to its economic development since the nineteenth-century gold rushes, and mining remains a cornerstone of export revenue and employment, particularly in Western Australia and Queensland.

Iluka secures $1.2bn Australian government loan for rare earths refinery

Iluka Resources has received a A$1.65-billion non-recourse loan from Export Finance Australia to build the Eneabba rare earths refinery in Western Australia, the country's first fully integrated facility of its kind. The refinery is over 50% complete, with the first tranche of A$1.25-billion expected to be fully drawn by year-end when construction reaches 75% completion.

Cobra confirms low-cost rare earth recovery potential in South Australia

London-listed Cobra Resources has reported favourable rare earth assay results at its Boland and Head prospects in South Australia, including a high-grade continuous five-kilometre flank at Head with intersections of up to 3 607 parts per million total rare earth oxide. The company's Wudinna project hosts Australia's only rare earth deposit suitable for in-situ recovery mining, which managing director Rupert Verco says positions Cobra competitively at the bottom of the cost curve.

New Zealand fast-tracks gold projects as production set to double

New Zealand is accelerating gold project approvals and courting mining investors as soaring bullion prices revive the sector, with production on track to double by the mid-2030s to its highest in at least three decades. The push faces opposition from environmentalists and parts of the agricultural sector concerned about damage to the country's pristine image, with a controversial Santana Minerals project awaiting a decision by October 29, 2026.
