Glyn Rhonwy pumped-storage scheme project, UK

Name of the Project
Glyn Rhonwy pumped-storage scheme project.

Location
The project has been designed to bring new life to two disused slate quarries in the slopes of Cefn Du mountain in the Dyffryn Peris valley, about 1.5 km north-west of Llanberis and 11 km south-east of Caernarfon, in Wales, UK.

Client
Snowdonia Pumped Hydro.

Project Description
The project will be the first new grid-scale power storage facility built in the UK in more than 30 years. The scheme will use the Glyn Rhonwy and Chwarel Fawr slate quarries.

The 99.9 MW scheme will comprise:
• the upper reservoir at Chwarel Fawr quarry and its dam and spillway to the Nant Y Betws;
• the lower reservoir at Glyn Rhonwy quarry and its dam and spillway to Llyn Padarn;
• a penstock connecting the Chwarel Fawr quarry to the power station located adjacent to Glyn Rhonwy;
• a tailrace connecting the power station to Glyn Rhonwy; and
• the power station itself consisting of the turbines and pumps at depth with electrical distribution equipment on the surface adjacent to the power station building.

The development will be connected to the electricity distribution network through a new electrical connection. This will be exported from an on-site substation to an off-site substation near Pentir.

A total of 300 jobs will be created during the three-year construction and 30 full-time jobs once operational.

Value
The project will cost about £130-million to implement.
