Specialist contract company Industrial Flooring Systems (IFS) is undertaking a number of floor installation projects in the Western Cape.
In March, IFS completed the installation of epoxy floors for hygiene and health solutions provider Kimberly Clark’s two latest production lines at its Epping 2 facility, in Cape Town.
“Kimberly Clark required an easy-to- maintain, high-gloss finish suitable for fork truck, pallet jack and pedestrian traffic,” says IFS MD Rory Heath.
He adds that the surface, which was prepared and primed with Sikafloor 156ZA primer and finished with a 1 mm application of Sikafloor 261ZA, covered an area of 3 400 m2.
This high-gloss epoxy system was selected for the flooring as the high-tech production facility, which is spread over two levels, required a floor finish that would provide good reflective light and an easily maintainable surface.
“IFS needed to apply the epoxy finish during a two-day shutdown period, prior to the commissioning of the new production lines,” says Heath.
Meanwhile, IFS is undertaking a number of projects for the Department of Public Enterprises, including the installation of floors at two new prisons, namely Brandvlei Medium C Prison and Vanrhynsdorp Medium C Prison.
Construction company Group Five contracted IFS for the installation of 13 300 m2 of flooring at the Brandvlei prison.
Civil engineering and building con- struction group Vusela Construction contracted the company to complete the flooring in the Vanrhynsdorp prison, which is expected to be completed in April and will cover an area of more than 6 500 m2.
“The floor finish at these prisons is a polymer modified concrete screed Polyscreed Terrazzo, which is nonpermeable, and will require minimal maintenance on completion,” Heath says.
IFS will provide a ten-year guarantee with a 20-year floor finish reference as well as compressive strengths of about 125 MPa for both of these projects.
Meanwhile, Heath says that decorative heavy-duty finishes are a growing trend with many suppliers in the flooring industry.
A number of terrazzo, type decorative floor finishes have been installed by IFS and the company has been awarded several projects in which IFS has specified, supplied and installed the heavy-duty, minimal maintenance Polyscreed Terrazzo finish, Heath concludes.
